Sooner or later, most Starlink Mini owners need more cable. The dish has to go where it sees the sky, and that is rarely right next to the battery or wall socket. Extending a DC power cable is not like extending a lamp lead, though. Every metre adds resistance, and at low voltage that loss can starve the dish. This guide explains how far you can go, why the supply voltage changes the answer and how to plan a run that works first time.
Why length matters
A wire's resistance causes a voltage drop proportional to its length and the current flowing. Higher voltage means less current for the same power, so less drop. At 30V and 40W, current is about 1.3A. At 12V and 40W, it is about 3.3A, two and a half times more, and the drop is two and a half times greater for the same cable. And at 12V, you start with less headroom to lose.
Rough voltage drop examples
| Supply | Current (40W) | 5m of 18AWG, round trip | 5m of 14AWG, round trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12V | About 3.3A | About 0.7V (6%) | About 0.27V (2%) |
| 20V | 2A | About 0.4V (2%) | About 0.17V (under 1%) |
| 30V | About 1.3A | About 0.28V (under 1%) | About 0.11V |
These are approximate copper resistance calculations for illustration, and exclude connector losses. Peaks above 40W increase drop further. The pattern is the useful part: at 12V, length and thin wire cost you; at 30V, they barely matter.
Practical length guide
| Setup | Comfortable run | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Original Mini power supply (30V) | Long, many metres | Check the Starlink shop for official cable options |
| Boosted 12V cable (20V output) | Around 3m included, can extend modestly | Boost near the battery |
| Plain 12V cable | Keep short | Drop and sag add up quickly |
| USB-C PD trigger cable | The cable's own length only | Do not extend the USB-C side |
Where to put the long section
If you must cover a long distance at 12V, put the boost converter at the battery end, then run the higher-voltage cable to the dish. That way, the long section carries low current. Avoid running a long 12V cable and boosting at the dish end. Our boost converter guide explains the sizing.

FlenKn 2-in-1 Starlink Mini Power + Ethernet Cable, 16.5 ft (TPWLXL01)
One 16.5 ft / 5 m run carrying DC power and Cat 6 RJ45 Ethernet; 10A rated; 1000 Mbps; IPX4 gaskets on both ports; includes DC to USB-C adapter with PD chip (20V, up to 100W; listing says the PD source must supply at least 20V/3.25A); also sold in 33 ft
Pros
- Power and wired Ethernet in one cable
- Works with the original Mini power supply
- Includes a USB-C PD adapter
Cons
- IPX4 only, so keep the connectors out of standing water
- Listing's 65W minimum conflicts with Starlink's own 100W USB-C advice; plan for 100W
At 16.5 feet (5m) with a 10A rating, plus a Cat6 line, this is the longest single cable we have checked. FlenKn also sells a 33-foot version. It works with the original Mini power supply, which is the best voltage for a long run.
Starlink Mini USB-C to DC Waterproof Power Cable, 10 ft (B0DL5MR3ZG)
USB-C to DC barrel, 10 ft / 3 m; built-in PD receiver chip requests 20V; needs a PD source with at least 100W (20V/5A) output; waterproof
Pros
- Lets a 100W USB-C PD power bank run the Mini
- Long enough to reach the roof from the cabin
Cons
- Will not work from 65W or weaker USB-C ports
- Few published specs beyond length and PD trigger
A fixed 10-foot USB-C to DC length; the PD chip at the source end requests 20V. Do not add a USB-C extension before it.
Starlink Mini USB-C to DC Power Cable, 10 ft, 18AWG (B0DDL4Y9WK)
USB-C male to DC barrel male, 10 ft / 3 m; 18AWG wire; PD trigger chip requests 20V; needs 100W (20V/5A) PD source; waterproof gasket on the barrel end
Pros
- States 18AWG wire gauge
- Waterproof gasket on the dish end
Cons
- Same 100W PD requirement as any trigger cable
- No voltage display
The same length with stated 18AWG wire, so you know what you are working with when you calculate drop.
Connectors
- Every joint adds resistance. One good extension is better than three short ones.
- Check polarity and barrel size before connecting any third-party extension.
- Outdoor joints need weather protection: a gasketed connector, heat-shrink or a junction box.
- Do not leave connectors lying in puddles or snow.
Signs your run is too long
- The Mini boots fine on a short cable but reboots on the long one.
- It drops out at startup or when traffic spikes.
- The cable or connectors feel warm.
- A voltage display at the source reads fine but problems persist at the dish.
If you see these, shorten the run, use thicker wire or raise the voltage. Our reboot loop guide covers the other common causes.
Ethernet length
If you also need wired networking, the Ethernet standard allows runs of up to 100m for Cat5e and Cat6. Power is the limiting factor, not data. A combined power and Ethernet cable like the FlenKn simplifies long runs to a building.
Planning a run step by step
- Measure the actual route, not the straight line, including ups and downs.
- Add slack for drip loops and movement.
- Note your supply voltage and pick the wire gauge from a drop calculator.
- Keep the run in one piece where possible.
- Test the whole run at home under a heavy load, such as a video call, before you fix it in place on a roof or through a wall.
- Label both ends so you can trace it later without pulling panels.
FAQ
What is the longest Starlink Mini power cable?
That depends on voltage. On the original 30V supply, long runs are practical. At 12V, keep runs short or boost first.
Can I extend the USB-C side?
Not recommended. USB-C extensions often cannot carry 100W PD reliably.
Does a longer cable slow my internet?
No, unless voltage drop causes reboots. Data speed is not affected by power cable length.
What wire gauge for a long 12V run?
Thicker is better: 14AWG or 12AWG for several metres.
Do official Starlink cables come longer?
Starlink sells replacement and longer cables in some markets. Check the Starlink shop.
